What Are Liposomal Supplements, Anyway?

0

Taking multivitamins has been a part of the human health regime for a few decades now, but in recent years we’ve found that most capsules, tinctures, or supplements on the market just aren’t cutting it when it comes to actual nutrient absorption – the very thing they are supposed to help us with. With growing confusion surrounding the health and wellness industry, it can be overwhelming to be a consumer these days. But a new type of supplement on the market- liposomes – is distinguishing itself from the others we generally see. Its name is a little deceiving because it’s not actually a supplement itself, but a vehicle for any dietary supplements to be more readily bioavailable. If you haven’t heard of liposomes and their significant benefits – here is what you need to know.

What Are Liposomes?

Liposomes are tiny bi-layered lipid bubbles that are barely the width of a single human hair. They are made of the same fats of our own cell membranes – phospholipids, which allows them to be delivered straight to our cells – something other supplement structures cannot do. This fact is why liposomal supplements reign supreme when it comes to bioavailability, because various vitamins, minerals, and other supplements can be chemically “packaged” within a liposome to be delivered directly to our cells. (1). Other supplement structures get flushed out through our digestive tract because they are not small enough to bypass through our cell membranes. Studies regarding the bioavailability of certain vitamins found in some cases that liposomal vitamin C was 200% more bioavailable in its liposomal form than any other. (1).

Because of its increased ability to help your body actually absorb the nutrients, liposomal supplements are quickly becoming a preferred choice for those who find dietary supplementation to be beneficial. Without quality and bioavailability, you may as well not be taking a multivitamin or dietary supplement, as you are likely getting much less of the benefits than you think. Apart from vitamins, liposomes can be used to deliver other substances as well to the cells, such as CBD and glutathione.

Liposomal Glutathione

Glutathione is an extremely important tripeptide substance made from the amino acids cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid, and it is heavily involved in the detoxification process in our livers. As it is made naturally in the body in the liver, almost all cells have an extremely high concentration of glutathione, underlining its importance in our health and metabolic functions. Along with detoxification, it is also involved in muscle and tissue repair and reducing oxidative stress to enhance immune function.(2)

Liposomal glutathione has been found to be more bioavailable than its non-liposomal counterparts, therefore allowing this very important nutrient to be absorbed within the body more effectively.(3).  It has also been found that liposomal glutathione helps to elevate body stores of natural glutathione and markers of immune function. Levels of oxidative stress were lower in those that took the liposomal glutathione vs. the control.(4). Overall, those who were taking the liposomal versions of glutathione had an overall higher rate of immune system health.

Do I Need Liposomal Supplements?

While certainly not everyone needs supplements, because of the world we live in today, with a food system that comes in below par on the nutrition density scale, it’s likely that many of us could benefit from supplementation. But, we will only benefit if those supplements are manufactured properly, with the right quality and bioavailability to be of use. Liposomal supplements provide a much higher guaranteed absorption rate than your traditional multivitamin gummies or capsules due to its precise manufacturing and ability to deliver nutrients directly to our cells.(5). Liposomes are a natural way of getting your cells, and by extension, your body what it needs every day.

Whether or not you need supplementation may be a conversation for you and your health care professional, but when it comes to the type of supplementation you can get – liposomal supplements have distinguished themselves as the top option.
