Five Technologies That Positively Impacted Personal Fitness

0

This article examines five technologies that have positively impacted the personal fitness space. This is not a rehashed view but an objective perspective noting any possible negatives. We will discuss the nuances of some of these technologies and give you some helpful insights.

Key Takeaways

  • How home gym equipment can help.
  • The benefits and differences in fitness apps.
  • Why smartwatches can help, but things to be aware of.
  • The reasons for online fitness group success with examples.
  • Park Run is a group fitness movement, and we explain how it’s still personal fitness.

One – Home Gym Equipment

While it might not be considered a technology, access to home gym equipment has provided the most significant impact on personal fitness. Brands like Mirafit and Rogue, which have emerged as industry leaders in home fitness products, have made access easier. For example, you can buy 5kg dumbbells from Mirafit, and whether it’s a full-blown squat rack or a knee wrap, the postage is just £4.95, making it incredibly convenient for you to take charge of your fitness journey.

By removing barriers to exercise, it ensures that you are engaging with the highest number of people possible. Making fitness equipment more accessible means more people will buy more people use it and Fitness levels will improve.

Two – Fitness Apps

Apps need to be included because they have had a noticeable impact on personal fitness. There are two distinct areas to consider when using apps. First, there are fitness apps that provide exercises and content access with free and paid solutions catering to your specific needs. Second, there are Fitness Tracker Apps that give you insights and allow you to log your personal performance, like Strava, to understand your unique fitness journey.

Fitness App

Example: Fitain, WithU, exercise plans, messaging, follow contributors, free and paid options.

Fitness Tracker App

Example: Strava, Garmin Connect, challenges, messaging, follow and like, free and paid options.

Three – Smartwatches

Generally linked to apps like Garmin Connect, smartwatches have been responsible for encouraging personal fitness and have arguably helped to put our fitness under a microscope. They provide daily reminders, sleep pattern insights, body battery visualisations, and other recommendations such as hydration and fitness breaks.

These useful technologies have helped to raise ‘health awareness.’ However, there are potential drawbacks to this. For instance, smartwatches can sometimes detect irregularities like heart anomalies. While this can be helpful in assisting with undiagnosed conditions, it can also add pressure to an already shaky healthcare system.

Four – Online Fitness Groups

Fitness was an in-person solution before the seemingly overnight growth of online fitness groups. But what are they? Bodypump is perhaps the best example of how this can work; it is an in-person activity used by gyms to run classes up and down the country and internationally. Forced online by the pandemic, Bodypump went to a subscription model, which allows the individual to access all of the paid content from the comfort of home.

How can this help personal fitness? Well, the fact that you can access follow-along classes makes this a personal fitness technology that can be used at any time to suit you, which removes many of the perceived barriers of inconvenience.  If you prefer to avoid the pressures of classes or are short of time, this is a great solution.

Five – Park Run

Parkrun started back in 2004 when 13 runners and five volunteers got together on a windy day in Bushy Park, Teddington, UK. Since that day, it has boomed. This is primarily due to the fact it is a place to do casual fitness, and the regular meet-ups, which often include post-run social gatherings, mean that you are held unofficially accountable by the regulars and friendships that materialise. Park Run costs nothing and is one of the most successful group fitness activities globally.

Park Run is ideal as a personal fitness solution because you can attend without commitment. Personal motivation comes from personal development, goals, and achievements that drive you to attend and become addicted.

Final thoughts

Technology and developments have empowered self-monitoring and the promotion of health and well-being. A dashboard of statistics is available at the click of a button; groups can be easily accessed from home.

This demonstrates that technology can help us improve our personal fitness and see metrics that we would not typically have access to. With improved self-monitoring and a continual reminder of keeping healthy, technology has encouraged generational change.
